Wood Boring Beetle
Description
The adult beetle is about 3/16" - 1/4" long, cylindrical and red-brown to dark brown in color. They have a series of pits in rows that run lengthwise on the wing covers. The larvae are a whitish-gray and 1/4" long. The first seven abdominal segments have tiny spines of them. Theses spines are arranged in two rows running across the body on the first six segments; the seventh segment has only one row.
Habitat
Wood Boring Beetles infest all types of wood. THey prefer seasoned, softwood and sapwood, which is why you will typically find infestations in crawl spaces and basements. However, they will also infest hardwood and heartwood. An infestation can be identified by small, round holes on the surface of the wood wiht fine to coarse powder sifting from them. Reinfestation occurs most commonly where ventilation is poor and himidity is absorbed by the wood.
