Mosquito
Description
Mosquitos are members of the order Diptera i.e. flies. Mosquitos are slender, long legged, two winged insects that are 1/8" to 1/4" long. They are unlike other flies in that their wings and bodies are covered with scales, and they have long piercing mouthparts. The larvae are aquatic and have well-developed heads, swollen and unsegmented thoraxes, and eight segmented abdomens whcih end in an elongated breathing tube.
Habitat
Mosquitos are daytime biters, but some species bite at dawn and dusk. Mosquitos can travel up to 20 miles from the breeding site. In the summer, mosquitos become major nuisances as they seek out humans for their blood meal. Mosquitos can usually breed in marshes, swamps, storages sites, and other sites which are difficult to manage, such as sewers and under structures.
