Fire Ants are a group of ants that actually inject venom with a stinger. This can cause serious irritation, strong reactions and even death in sensitive individuals. All fire ants are fast-moving and very aggressive with colonies that can have up to 500,000 workers foraging over an area of 100 yards. There are four species of fire ants that require professional extermination within the United States: general fire ant, red imported fire ant, black imported fire ant and southern fire ant. Professional ant extermination is recommended for any of the following:
Red Imported Fire Ant: Reddish brown in color, 1/15" - 1/4" inch long, colonizes in dirt mounds and attacks aggressively in large numbers. Found throughout the southern United States. This species of fire ant is perhaps the most prominent in fire ant control.
Black Imported Fire Ant: Dark brown in color, similar in size to the red imported fire ant and generally found in northern Alabama and Mississippi.
Southern Fire Ant: Brown/black abdomen with a yellow or red head and thorax. These ants nest in loose soil and may also colonize in wood work Like the red imported fire ant, they are also found throughout the southern United States.
Fire Ant: Lacking a distinctive name, this particular species (S. geminata) varies in color and is similar in size and habits to the ants mentioned above. It is found along coastal areas of the US.
Fire ant control is highly recommended when these pests make an appearance on residential or commercial properties. These ants pose a potentially serious health risk and can develop multiple nests within a fairly small area. Make Alpha Ecological your extermination company to control fire ants for you today.
